30 October pub notice: what changes and what to put in writing
From 30 October 2026, employers can be liable for harassment of their staff by customers and other third parties, related to things like sex, race, disability, religion or age, unless they took all reasonable steps to prevent it. Employers must also take all reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment. For a pub, that includes the people on the other side of the bar.
What the 30 October change means for a pub
The duty is about steps. A customer notice is one of the steps a pub can show it has taken, alongside a written policy, a staff briefing and a record of what happens.
If a tribunal upholds a sexual harassment claim and finds the duty was breached, it can increase compensation by up to 25%. The Equality and Human Rights Commission can take enforcement action against employers who don't take reasonable steps.
What a customer notice is for
A notice near the bar tells customers how staff should be treated. On its own it is not the whole answer. It works best as part of a short set of papers that put in writing the steps you've taken: policy, staff briefing, customer notice and a record sheet.
