Notices UK pubs commonly display

A working checklist for pubs in England and Wales. It is the set of notices people expect to see, not a complete reading of your premises licence.

General information, not legal advice. Your licence may add conditions this list does not mention. When in doubt, read the licence and ask the licensing authority.

Tick what you already have up. Ticks stay in this browser only. Nothing is sent to Bay Admin.

Premises licence summary Required Licensing Act 2003, section 57. The summary of the premises licence is to be displayed prominently. Keep the licence, or a certified copy, at the premises, with the summary. England and Wales.
Drinks measures Required The mandatory licensing conditions say that, where you sell them, beer and cider must be available in half pints, gin, rum, vodka and whisky in 25ml or 35ml, and still wine in 125ml. Customers have to be told. A line on the menu or price list is enough. It does not have to be a separate poster. Separately, the Weights and Measures (Intoxicating Liquor) Order 1988 requires a written statement of the spirit measures you use, displayed so customers can see it before buying. For wine, it can be in every wine list and menu instead.
Challenge 25 or age-check notice Check the licence The mandatory conditions require an age-verification policy. They do not, by themselves, name a Challenge 25 poster. Challenge 25 is the policy most pubs use, and some licences require the poster as a condition. Put it where the sale is made: the bar, the till, the door.
No-smoking sign Required Smoke-free premises need a no-smoking sign. England and Wales do not use the same rule on size and where it goes. In England, at least one legible sign in a prominent position is the current requirement. Check the rule for the nation you trade in before you order a stack of door signs.
Allergen notice If you serve food Customers need allergen information. For food that is not pre-packed, that can be written or spoken. A sign telling people to ask staff is the usual way to point them to it. Food pre-packed for direct sale needs a label with the name and the full ingredients, with allergens emphasised. That rule has applied since 1 October 2021.
Food hygiene rating sticker Required in Wales In Wales, the Food Hygiene Rating (Wales) Act 2013 requires the sticker to be displayed. In England, display is not compulsory, though customers and many councils expect to see it.
CCTV sign If you use cameras If you record people, tell them. A short sign at the entrance is the usual way to do that under UK GDPR. Some premises licences also require CCTV and a sign. If you have no cameras, skip this one.
Employers’ liability certificate If you employ anyone The certificate of employers’ liability insurance must be displayed where staff can read it, or given to them electronically if they can reasonably reach it. This is a staff-side notice, not a sign for the street.
Health and safety law poster If you employ anyone Display the current Health and Safety Executive law poster, or give each worker the official leaflet. Staff area, not the front window.
Fire exit signs and a fire action notice As the risk assessment requires Fire exit signs are required where people need them to find a way out. A fire action notice by the break-glass or the staff board is standard. The fire risk assessment for the building decides the detail. This list cannot.
Gaming machine notice Only if you have machines Follow the permit and the conditions that apply to those machines. If you have none, this does not apply.
Refusal of service Common practice There is no single statutory poster that says you will not serve someone who is drunk. It is still common, and it supports the licensing objectives. Useful beside the till if staff have to refuse a sale.

Staff board, not the bar front

The Pub & Café Staff Notice Pack is a set of printable notices for the staff board. It costs £19 + VAT. Gumroad, our payment provider, adds UK VAT at checkout. It does not replace the premises licence summary, the no-smoking sign, or any other notice the law or your licence tells you to display to the public.
